About

Helen is a dance artist and scholar

whose research navigates embodied, sensory, and relational approaches to being in the world through artistic inquiry.

Helen's movement practice is informed by extensive study of Bartenieff Fundamentals

and other somatic movement philosophies, with a belief in the frameworks these practices offer for human expression. Helen's work addresses some of the complexities of our relationships with our sense of self and each other, explored through improvised movement, sound and gesture, text, and touch. Current research explores relationships of human and more-than human environments with movement, multi-sensory feedback, and care.

Helen has worked in Higher Education for 20 years, moving in this time through practice-as-research and research-informed pedagogies of practice within and beyond academia. Helen currently holds the position of Director of Studies at

Northern School of Contemporary Dance,

 Co-Artistic Director of

DancingStrong Movement Lab with Adesola Akinleye, and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dance, Movement & Spiritualities.

Recent publications include; Dancing Place: Scores of the City, Scores of the Shore, co-authored with Adesola Akinleye (Intellect Publishers), and The 'Female' Dancer: a soma-scientific approach, co-edited with Claire Farmer (Routledge Taylor Francis Group)
